Expanding Shanghai’s eastern ring as part of the Jingqiao sub-center, Pukai Zhangjiabang is a mixed-use, public space-first development defined by a prominent sports stadium.
Neighboring two sides of the Shanghai Port FC soccer stadium, the project consists of an intimately crafted district with office and retail programming, designed with creative industry tenants in mind. The site is surrounded by residential, hotel, and leisure programming, forming a new central node for the growing urban developments of the Jingqiao sub-district.
Along the north-south axis, the business and leisure zones are linked by a network of pedestrian pathways. A canal bisects the site through the eastern part and is crossed by a series of bridges, heightening connectivity. This waterway runs between a central grouping of office towers and is flanked by integrated landscaping throughout the site, forming a green heart for the project, and creating spaces for users to come together and connect with nature.
To the west of the green heart, an intimately scaled network of pedestrian streets and alleys gives access to a series of retail pavilions. Envisioned as the main space for social life and entertainment within the district, the retail center serves as a bridge between the activities of the stadium and those in the surrounding development.
The architectural language of the buildings refers to a Chinese lantern, a concept considered in the buildings’ volumes and the visual transformations between day and night. The lantern inspiration is translated into warm three-dimensional extensions on the façade, complemented by a raindrop-inspired façade that appears to cascade down the building in cool tones. The tower façades have been carefully optimized to distribute external fins for sun shading in those areas where they are most needed, avoiding peak solar gain. The project is targeting both China Green Building and LEED Gold Neighborhood Development certifications.
