The adaptively reused dome structure, now a performing arts and sports venue, was once the center of Asia’s largest cement factory.

SHANGHAI—The West Bund Dome Art Center has opened in Shanghai’s West Bund Cultural Corridor. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL), the Denmark studio of global design firm Perkins&Will, this performing arts venue, which will also host sporting events, sits within what was the "pre-homogenization" dome structure at the center of China’s first, and oldest, cement production facility with wet process.

Pre-homogenization is the process that brings together the raw materials required for cement production. At the middle of the dome structure was a clock-like machine that rotated constantly, blending crushed limestone and minerals. The adaptive reuse project takes this industrial operation as inspiration, transforming the former raw material mixer into a contemporary multicultural blender.

A transformative rebirth of industrial heritage

Shanghai’s West Bund Cultural Corridor is the largest cultural district in Asia, home to several world class art galleries and a 11.4-kilometer waterfront park. SHL has a long history working with West Bund, a relationship that began in 2013 with the creation of the Cloud Pavilion as part of the 2013 West Bund Biennale of Architecture and Contemporary Arts.

This renovated industrial heritage has become an ideal venue for hosting a variety of events, including art exhibitions, concerts, dance performances, and sports events. Since its opening to the public in September 2023, it has hosted a series of international cultural activities. It served as the opening venue for the Shanghai Urban Space Arts Season (SUSAS) and was a primary venue for the tenth West Bund Art and Design Expo. Additionally, it has been the unique source of inspiration for the world renowned choreographer Shen Wei’s immersive art show, Integrate.

“We were first invited to consider a future for the iconic dome structure back in 2013, and for us there was never any doubt that it should be kept as a marker for the industrial significance of the site on Shanghai,” says Chris Hardie, principal and design director at SHL. “West Bund has always been a stage for art and exhibition, but this is expanding into the performing arts and sports. Creating a flexible, yet unique venue was always our goal.”

Adaptive reuse

While preserving the industrial features and historical significance of the pre-homogenization building, including its dome structure and conveyor bridge, the design team undertook an adaptive transformation. Through an examination of historic documents, the steel frame of the dome was meticulously preserved and restored to its original orange hue, echoing the area’s iconic orange tower cranes, which used to load and unload ships, and symbolically bridging the past and future. To accommodate the building's new program needs, a new independent layer of steel structure was added inside, distinguished from the existing framework by a gray tone.

The roof incorporates a new translucent polycarbonate panel system that replaces the original opaque metal roofing. During the day, natural light filters through the adjustable roof cavity louvers, illuminating the interior. From the outside, the orange color of the preserved structure is visible under the panels. As night falls, the building becomes a gentle lantern, emitting a warm glow.

The interior of the building features a circular multipurpose hall of nearly 3,000 square meters, surrounded by flexible functional spaces such as the public foyer and a second floor viewing gallery. The first-floor facade is composed of glass fiber reinforced concrete panels made with recycled glass aggregates and decorative panels that were also crafted from recycled glass. The creative use of these low-carbon, environmentally friendly materials lends a unique texture and expressive quality to the building.

“The renovation of historical buildings is inherently a process of reclaiming and repurposing space and structure,” says Chao Chen, associate principal and project director at SHL. “Therefore, our focus on material expression places special emphasis on innovative materials that align with the principles of recycling and regeneration. This approach aims to achieve comprehensive sustainability in the adaptive reuse projects.”

Activating the community

Guided by the 2040 Shanghai Master Plan, Shanghai West Bund, which emblemizes the century-long history of Chinese national industry, is evolving into the largest cultural and artistic district in Asia. SHL has collaborated with West Bund for over a decade: In 2013, SHL was invited to design a series of pavilions for the first West Bund Biennale of Architecture and Contemporary Art. The firm’s temporary installation, "Cloud Pavilion," initially planned for a two-month exhibition, gained public acclaim and was preserved, transforming into a now-popular 7-11 convenience store. Since then, SHL has completed various projects in the West Bund, including the S2 and Chunshen Gang Pavilions. S2 was also one of the venues for the 2023 SUSAS.

In September 2024, the SHL-designed West Bund Grand Theater is set to open to the public. The opening of these two theatres—the Dome and the Grand Theater—represent a pivotal moment in the redevelopment of this former industrial zone. Together, they will activate a unique cultural and artistic atmosphere, completing the transition from "rust belt" to "showcase belt."

"The transformation of the West Bund’s industrial heritage not only respects the historical development of the entire area but also reflects a commitment to sustainability and innovation. " says Keyang Ye, Deputy General Manager of West Bund Group, "We aim to infuse new activities into this space, allowing a dialogue between history and the future, between industry and art, to be reactivated and resonated within this container. "
